i always have candles, purely for the soft light they emite and the scent; i forget there were used as a light source way back when

I’m very glad for electricity, computers, indoor plumbing…But I remember some gentler times from my childhood, in the Maine Woods or on a Connecticut beach where they still used coal oil lamps and candles and fireplace heat. How soft the lights were and how gentle they made the dark in the corners of the room. When storms have taken out the power lines here in the Texas “outback,” the soft lights return me to my childhood. But when the lights first turn on, how harsh they seem, and the world with them–though the internet pulls me back into the 21st century within minutes.
